Our first trip away in February took us to Ludlow, Shropshire. We didn’t have long to spend there, not even a weekend due to work commitments, so we travelled down on Saturday evening. As you can see Loki is SO relaxed in the van now. He really doesn’t travel well in the car, he just loves sitting in the front seat with us (with his seatbelt harness on of course!)
Finding campsites this time of year isn’t always easy, as most open in March/April but we did find Ludlow Touring Park, so this is where we stayed. Up until now we had always stayed in very basic campsites, basically a field with basic toilets and showers. Rarely did they have hot water and often the showers are frozen up! But this campsite seemed like luxury; there was a security gate, a large toilet and shower block with heating AND hot water and even a shop!
Once all signed in, we asked for a good pub to eat at, so half an hour later we were sat in The Charlton Arms. Right on the edge of Ludlow, Loki was the only dog but they were more than happy for him to be in there. We usually end up eating in the bar area but he was kindly welcomed into the restaurant! Loki had to sit under the table, he was so well behaved considering the waiters were walking past him so often with delicious smelling food!
The food in The Charlton Arms was amazing! We shared a Scotch egg to start (a favourite of ours), I had Pork Tenderloin and Aaron had Chicken Ballotine for main, we then shared the cheese board. We loved the local cheeses and this set us on our quest to find some local cheese the following day!
We woke up on Sunday morning after a rather windy and rainy night, wondering how soaked we would get on our walk! But actually by 9am the sun was shining! We found our walk on the ifootpath app, which I would be lost without, and highly recommend!
The walk was just under 5 miles and started in Mortimer Forest, which overlooks Ludlow. After walking through the forest you head down towards the town, across the river and up to the castle! The river was flowing incredibly fast, Loki was desperate for a swim but of course he wasn’t allowed in!
Once we arrived at the castle this is where Ludlow town square is, fortunately there was a market on so we bought some local cheese to take home and had some lunch, before heading back to the van. We didn’t go in the castle, but you can walk round the outside.
In the afternoon we found a dog-friendly pub to watch the rugby. The Rose and Crown was just perfect! Loki shared a cooked sausage with another dog from the landlord so he was loving life! They had good local beer and at half time even the humans were given roast potatoes and sausages as free snacks!
Once the rugby had finished we headed back to the van and headed home. A short but sweet visit to Ludlow! If you are interested here are the links to the places we visited:
